Fade Rift Application

PLAYER

Name: Rissa
Age: 22
Contact: [plurk.com profile] primadonutgirl
Other Characters: Planning on applying as Sigrun.
Interests: Mae is a political powerhouse back in Tevinter, so political intrigue should be fun to explore with her. She's also a capable mage, so she won't shy away from the action. She'll be sticking her nose in anything to do with Tevinter, basically-- The Venatori, the origins of Corypheus, foreign relations... And mage rights, potentially, depending on how things develop. I'd like her to experience some culture shock and repercussions what with being a magister and all, too, though I'm sure that'll happen naturally.

CHARACTER

Name: Maevaris Tilani
Canon/OC: Canon
Journal: [personal profile] magistermaevaris
Race: Human
Nationality: The Tevinter Imperium
Occupation: Magister
Age: Early thirties

History

Here is her wiki page, which briefly outlines her involvement in the Dragon Age comics and Inquisition, and here is her entry in The World of Thedas Volume 2, which gives a lot more history on her in general. Given that Alistair is a warden, however, I am assuming that Maevaris' adventures with him, Isabela and Varric did not happen. Which is a little concerning when you consider the possibility of Aurelian Titus going unchecked. A future plot point, perhaps?

Personality

At first glance, Maevaris certainly looks the part of the stereotypical magister. She’s all flash and glamour, dripping in gems and good looks and touting the words of a snake charmer, besides. Her pride is apparent for all to see, overshadowed only by her opulence. Look further, however, and it becomes evident that her similarities to the average magister run only skin deep. She counts herself among the proud few members of the Magisterium that have managed to not sacrifice their ideals and beliefs on their way to the top, not only surviving in the cutthroat world of the Imperial Senate but thriving.

Her time spent dealing in diplomatic negotiations and political maneuvering has molded her into a verifiable sociable machine. Charisma radiates off of her like a beacon, as bright as her demeanor. Her gilded tongue is known for spinning tales of charm and wit, and the very way she holds herself is indicative of grace and poise, of handling anything life throws her way with a noble smile. Pleasantries can come in many forms, however, and hers tend to lean towards the more flirtatious side. More than that, they can come off a bit... Strong. She has never been one to hide who she is, regardless of the inconvenience, and her etiquette reflects that.

While many magisters would use such a command of language as a form of malicious manipulation, her way with people is authentic as they come. Maevaris has a genuinely kind heart, harboring good intentions in much of what she does. As idealistic as it sounds, she wants to make Tevinter a better place. She is loyal to those that have shown they deserve it, fiercely protective towards individuals and causes that she holds in high regard, and she'll throw herself into a situation with wild abandon for the proper incentive. At the end of the day, her concern lies in doing the right thing, even if it’s not the easy thing.

For all the compassion she holds close to her chest, she does not let it blind her. She is firm in her convictions, unyielding in the face of adversity. And when Maevaris has been seriously wronged? She does not hesitate in taking vengeance. Her retaliation is swift and silent, and rumor of what she is capable of has earned her a reputation of equal parts fear and respect. Watching her father die for his innocuous nature was enough to make sure she would never fall prey to the same fate, and thus she walks a fine line of refusing to compromise her values while simultaneously not letting them be taken advantage of.

Strengths & Weaknesses

MAGIC //
Maevaris is a highly proficient mage, having such mastery of her craft that she requires no staff with which to channel her magic through. Instead, her hands glow a brilliant blue, magical energy coalescing around them as she does her casting. She does not appear to favor any particular school of magic, as she’s been shown to dabble in all of them. As a jack of all trades and master of none, she prefers versatility to specialization. But she suffers from the same pitfalls that most mages do. Relying on her magic has made her a glass cannon. She can’t put up much of a physical fight, and while her lack of a staff may make her more mobile on the battlefield, it leaves her without even a weapon to rely on if someone gets past her spells.

MONEY //
The combination of the inheritance passed down from her father and her late husband has left Maevaris ridiculously wealthy. Money may not be the key to happiness, but it can purchase a good deal of other things, and she has the resources to provide her allies with the best that gold can buy. Living in the lap of luxury has left her utterly spoiled, however, and when put into a situation where wealth cannot solve all her problems... It’s not likely to end well.

MAGISTER //
Her status as a member of the Magisterium can be as much of a strength as it is a weakness, as far as the lower half of Thedas is concerned. The name alone holds connotations, and the reputation of her fellow countrymen precedes her. As excellent of a politician as she may be, throwing her title around to the wrong nobles isn’t likely to help the Inquisition’s cause. Maevaris would like to think she can talk her way out of anything, if given the chance— But it’s getting that chance to be given that’s the tricky part. When it comes to using her influence, battles must be chosen carefully. And while she is more open-minded than most from her country, she still has a lot to learn about how life works outside of Tevinter.

Inventory

- What Maevaris believes to be a perfectly reasonable amount of fashionable travelling clothes. (It is not reasonable.)
- More gold than any traveler should sensibly carry.
- A lot of luxury items that make it obvious she does not know how to travel light.
- A good number of potions.
- And a complete lack of weapons, save for a small utility knife.

Motivation

As a magister fighting for reform in the Imperium, opposing the Venatori (and, by extension, Corypheus) is in Maevari's best interest. If that wasn't enough on its own, she also has friends and family in the Inquisition. Now? It's personal.
